Tonight marks the halfway point in my attempt to write, perform and blog about a new alternate tuning 6 days a week for one year. There have been so many challenges along the way, but I’ve also experienced a ton of really great things — both personally and musically.

First, I’d like to thank all of you who frequent this blog or follow us on social. It’s been a lot of fun hearing from so many great guitarists playing in alt tuning. I’ve appreciated every comment and connection – many times, encouragement coming my way when I needed it most.

Musically, playing in a new tuning every day has really changed my approach to songwriting. I’ve even noticed a difference in my approach to standard tuning on both guitar and bass.

Personally, I’m having the time of my life. But at times, I’ve battled fatigue and wasn’t sure if I would be able to continue. I’ve stuck it out and worked through those challenges to continue on this journey. I’m glad I have, and look forward to the next half of the year!

Let’s check out tonight’s song/idea titled, “Halfway Home” in the key of F Major:

Here are the chords I’m playing while using the full version of our chord charts, which illustrate 167 chords in this tuning.

  1. I was wondering with the ffcfac tuning- at the lowest two strings tuned in unison or is the low e tuned up to the f and the a tuned all the way up to f on the third string 3rd fret?
    thanks for your time!

Hi, Andrew – String 5 and 6 are in unison. I don’t recommend tuning more than a half step up from standard tuning to avoid breaking strings. And although I do have one or two tunings on this website that do this, I don’t recommend tuning string 3 up at all because it’s the string that breaks the most doing this.

I contacted Elixir strings about this and they said string 3 doesn’t have much room to go past the note G.

      Hope this helps!

      Scott
